Oscypek is a smoked cheese made of salted sheep milk and it’s typical of the Tatra Mountain region. At first, you might be intrigued by the look of it. When you buy one, its rubbery feeling might put you slightly off.

As you tentatively bite down on a corner, you feel a slight squeak as your teeth sink down on the cheese. The smoky-salted flavours fill your mouth and the sweet taste of the cranberry jam give an interesting sweet and salted taste to this snack.

In the town of Zakopane, you can find plenty of stalls selling Oscypek for around 2 Zloty each. The vendors usually have a little charcoal grill where they warm the cheese before serving it to you. You can eat it on its own or with cranberry jam. Eating one or two won’t really fill you up, so try one and see if you like it.
